(Wednesday UPDATE 3:55 p.m) Detectives with the Chattooga County Sheriffs Office have charged Justin Lee Long of an Alabama address in the shooting death of John England III of Summerville. Long is charged with murder; aggravated assault; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held without bond, according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader.
Recap: A 41-year-old Summerville man died after being shot in the stomach with a semi-automatic pistol around 5 p.m., Tuesday.
The victim is John Evern D. England III, who died at a Floyd County hospital. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, according to Chattooga Sheriff Mark Schrader.
Around 10 p.m., the sheriff, investigators and the GBI were beginning to talk with a person they think is connected with the shooting -- Justin Lee Long, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Authorities, however, are not 100-percent sure that's the correct name of the person they are questioning.
But authorities are suspicious that Long, a white male in his early 20's, is connected with the shooting because he fled from the scene and into the woods off O'Neil Road, Schrader said. Long was captured within minutes on Stoleman Road while hitching a ride with a local motorist that was unaware of the shooting.
Update 10 p.m. Although it's not been 100-percent confirmed, Chattooga Sheriff Mark Schrader says he believes the person of interest he is holding in tonight's shooting is Justin Lee Long, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama.
Update 9:40 p.m. The gunshot victim has been identified as John Evern D. England III, of Summerville, according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader. The victim was 41 years old.
UPDATE 9:14 p.m. "We have confirmed that the victim of the gunshot wound that was reported earlier this evening in the O'Neil Road area of the county has succumbed to the injury. The GBI has been called in to assist in processing the scene and more information will be released at a later time,"Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said.
A Chattooga County man was shot in the stomach this afternoon by a man authorities are having trouble identifying.
The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday off Oneil Road in Trion. The identity of the person shot has not been released by Chattooga County Sheriff's officials.
After the shooting, deputies went to a home off Oneil Road and a suspect fled. That suspect was later caught hitching a ride with someone on Stoleman Road, Trion. The man giving the ride was unaware of the shooting on the other nearby street.
Deputies found the suspect with a loaded semi-automatic pistol. The suspect, a man that looks to be in his 20's, would not give authorities a correct name, according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader.
