A seatbelt violation, a half-pound bag of marijuana and running from the law put one Rome man behind bars on April 13.
Summerville Policeman Ty Hutchins noticed John Johnson wasn't wearing a seatbelt. When the officer switched on the blue lights, Johnson swung open his driver side door and bolted down Bittings Avenue and Ross Street.
Officer Phillip Cox caught Johnson beside Heritage Propane off Commerce Street.
"I exited my patrol unit and as I was approaching the wood line, I observed a black male south of me lying on the ground. . . The subject was hiding in between some large propane tanks. I confronted the subject and he tucked his hands under his chest area. I advised the subject who was lying on his chest to put his hands behind his back. The subject was manipulating something and then did comply with putting his hands behind his back I did observe a cell phone under the subject and thought he was probably deleting incriminating messages. I later observed that the cell phone was broke in half. This is commonly observed behavior found to be conducted by persons in the drug trade when approached by officers," Officer Cox stated.
Officers found a plastic bag filled with marijuana behind the propane business. Johnson was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute and possession of drugs within 1,000 feet of a housing project, according to police reports.
