(Updated) Grady E. Winters

Mr. Grady E. Winters, age 93 of Lyerly, GA, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at this residence surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Winters was born July 28, 1924, in Gore, GA, son of the late E. E. Winters and Jessie Mae Fincher Winters.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Baggett to whom he was married on October 3, 1945, and preceded him in death on June 8, 2003; a brother, W. A. Winters; sisters, Evie Lee Holt, Mamie Carroll, and Mary Studdard.

Mr. Winters was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendant, Sunday School Teacher, and past Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  He lovingly was the caretaker of the church and cemetery fund.  He was the oldest living member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church.  He loved the church and all of the church members.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country in World War II.  After discharge from the military, he worked at Riegel Mills, and later, at Georgia Rug Mill from which he retired.

Mr. Winters was a farmer and enjoyed working the land and raising cattle.  He later named their farm Oak Hill Farms in the Oak Hill Community in Lyerly.  He enjoyed being a Paw Paw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  They were his pride and joy.

He was the last surviving founding member of the original Chattooga County Fair Association.  He was a Lyerly School Board Trustee from 1953 until 1960.

Mr. Winters is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Peggy Winters; a daughter, Carol Ann Winters; brothers and sister-in-law, Raymond and Faye Winters, Charles Winters; sisters, Marie Broyles, Hattie Dentmon, and Sara Duckett; grandchildren, Kristi and Robert Beach, Jason and Abbey Winters, Lori and Kyle Kellett, Lacey and Jason Baker; great-grandchildren, Gracie Ann Farmer, Grady “Gray” Beach, Walton Beach, Shelby Baker, Olivia Baker, Kylor Kellett, Ruby Kellett, Colton Baker, Jack Weaver, and Payton Weaver; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Winters will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, July 15, 2018, from the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Pastor Jason Willis officiating.  Interment will follow in the Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.  Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons, Grady “Gray” Beach, Walt Beach, and Raymond Winters.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the Oak Hill Community, Rayburn Mitchell, Roger Farmer, Johnny Hampton, Billy Edwards, Bob Hawkins, Johnny Crawford, Terry Rodgers, and Joe Reed.

Mr. Winters will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Saturday. He will also be in state at Oak Hill United Methodist Church from 3:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Sunday.
