Chattooga Young Farmers Host Local Farm Tour and Picnic
The Chattooga County Young Farmers hosted a local farm tour in June to three farms in the Gore-Subligna area of the county.
The idea for the tour was to visit farms producing a variety of products.
The group first toured the Jim Dixon farm. Mr. Dixson grows blueberries and sells the crop to various outlets. He and his wife started the operation when they moved into the county. They grow several varieties of blueberries and manage to operate the farm with little outside labor.
Next, the group met at H & P Farms. H & P is a beef cattle and hay farm operated by the families of Bengi Price and Jimmy Hix.
While at H & P Farms, the group watched a demonstration of ultrasound pregnancy testing of cattle by Dr. Kencade Sumner, DVM. The group also loaded onto a hay wagon and toured the brood cows/calves on pasture at the farm.
The last stop on the tour was the breeder hen operation of Jeremy Eager. The group learned a lot about the growing poultry industry in the county and the state. They were able to see the state of the art machinery used to collect eggs used for hatching.
The group then met at the farm of Dennis McCary for an afternoon cookout and fellowship.
