Churches To Give Away Backpacks And School Supplies Saturday

Event Starts At 10 a.m.

Twice each year, the Family Life Center of Summerville First Baptist Church is found to be overflowing with excited children and parents. One such day occurs in December as Breakfast with Santa is held. Another is the day leading to the opening of the school year when the scene holds the sharing of school supplies with local children.
On Saturday, members of three local churches will come together to provide colorful backpacks and stacks of school supplies to the children of Chattooga County. For the ninth year, the ministry known as “Sharing His Love through School Supplies” will offer these items to children of Chattooga County who might not otherwise be prepared for the opening day of school.
“This is an opportunity for our local churches to support and share God’s love to the children of Chattooga County. We look forward each year to being able to provide them with backpacks and school supplies as they begin the new school year,” according to Kristy Parker, an organizer of the event.
Members of Summerville First United Methodist Church and Horizon Baptist Fellowship along with members of Summerville First Baptist Church will give each child an age-appropriate backpack along with pencils, crayons, papers, notebooks and other supplies as needed for each grade level. Both the Chattooga County School System and Trion City Schools have provided lists of supplies needed for each grade and these lists are used to guide the provision of items to each child. The supplies will be offered beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and the children receiving the items must be present to receive them. Only Chattooga County residents are eligible for these supplies.
The event will be held in the Family Life Center of Summerville First Baptist Church which is located at 125 Georgia Avenue in downtown Summerville just across from Summerville City Hall. Entrance for this activity will be through the gymnasium located on Cox Street just behind the main church building.
A light lunch will be offered to each child and to accompanying family members.
New Testaments in the New King James Version will be offered as a ministry to each child along with personal conversations and counselors offering the Gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Pastor Sean Wegener, of Summerville First Baptist Church, along with Rev. Dr. Ed Judy, of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, and Rev. John Paul Harris, of Horizon Baptist Fellowship Church, will be available for this time of sharing.
The event will continue until the supplies are all given away or otherwise at 1 p.m.
