(Updated) George William Alexander

Mr. George William “Bill” Alexander, age 92, of Chattanooga, TN, formerly of Menlo, GA, died Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Hospice of Chattanooga.

Mr. Alexander was born July 12, 1926, in Menlo, GA, son of the late James Leroy “Roy” and Mary Elizabeth Freeman Alexander.  He was a member of the Menlo Presbyterian Church, and prior to his retirement, was employed as an agent with the Internal Revenue Service.  Mr. Alexander was a veteran of the United States Army where he held the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was stationed in Germany during and immediately following World War II.  He graduated from the University of Chattanooga and the Atlanta Law School with a master’s degree.  Mr. Alexander was also an avid golfer and loved to travel.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Hamilton Alexander and Joseph Alexander; and a nephew, Richard Alexander.

Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Lea Hood Alexander; step-children, Diane (Doug) Sitton, Victor (Pam) Hood, and Benton Hood (Wanda Beebe); sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Alexander; niece, Mary Ellen Alexander; nephew, Robert Alexander; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Alexander will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Alpine Community Church with Pastor Jan Warren-Taylor officiating.  Interment will follow in the Alpine Church Cemetery.

Mr. Alexander will be in state at Alpine Community Church and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in Mr. Alexander’s name to the Alpine Cemetery Fund or to the local hospice center of your choice.
