Properties Sold For Overdue Taxes

Four Chattooga Count properties were sold on the courthouse steps last week in an effort to collect unpaid property taxes.

“I started out a few months ago with 82 properties slated for [the April 2] tax sale. Four of those remained unpaid and were sent to auction,” Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton said.

The sale generated $19,059.51 in bids. Out of that, $7,073.04 went to pay taxes, the other $11,986.47 were earmarked as excess funds that will go back to the property owner.

The properties that sold, according to the tax commissioner included:

  • 3625 Hwy. 100, Summerville: This property was sold to Teresa Womack, of Gaylesville, for $1,700.
  • 115 Fabric Shack Road, Summerville: This property sold to Timothy Easler, of Decator, for $9,800.
  • 253 McCollum Street, Trion: This property was sold to George Coffia, of Trion, for $4,459.51.
  • 27 Dogwood Lane, Lyerly: This property was sold to Terry Battles, of Lyerly, for $3,100.
