Cruelty Arrest: Dog Left Unattended In Cage For 2-Weeks

A local man was jailed Thursday for leaving his dog unattended in a cage for two weeks, according to Summerville Police reports.

Chattooga County Animal Control Officer Daniel Hayes received a tip that a pit bulldog mix was locked inside a cage near 25 Mountain Side Drive. The tipster claimed the owner hasn’t been around for two weeks.

Animal control found the dog and it could barely stand, according to an incident report.

“When I made contact with the animal, it had clearly not been out of the cage in an estimated 14 days due to the smell and the animal’s inability to stand. The animal’s hair had began to fall out. I could see the whole rib cage pronounced through the skin,” Officer Matt Pritchard reported.

The dog was left caged in 90-degree weather, the officer stated.

“Daniel Hayes had already begun to try to get the dog to drink water. He stated it was one of the worst cases of neglect that he had encountered as his time with animal control,” Officer Pritchard stated.

They took the animal to the Summerville Veterinary Clinic where staff immediately began to wash the dog and try to make it feel comfortable.

“I was able to make contact with Dristin Ogles, 22, who had been residing at 290 Melba Drive in Trion for the past two months with his father. I asked Dristen why he had left the animal in the cage abandoned. He stated that his mother had recently passed and that he had been evicted from the residence. He went on to state that he needed to just get his ‘$#**’ together. Mr. Ogles appeared to be very regretful for his abandonment of the animal,” Officer Pritchard stated.

Ogles was arrested for cruelty to animals, according to jail reports.

He should have been arrested, I think that anyone that has been arrested for such offense shouldn’t be allowed to have animals again

I totally agree. I can not say publicly how I feel about this man. However, I’m sure you can guess.

Just because this idiot feels remorse means nothing, NOTHING, compare it to how that poor dog felt as it was slowly facing an agonizing death. How could this fool lay down at night and sleep knowing that this dog was there LOCKED IN A CAGE in 100-degree heat with no water and no food? If this Animal Abuser does NOT get jail time and a stiff fine the county will owe the taxpayers a public reason as to why He did NOT.!!

So he wanted to join the Army, HA ! I don’t know a branch of service that will want him. Not military or civil . Every active duty & veteran I know would not spit in his mouth if he were dying of thirst.

I’m so thankful he was arrested. But it bothers me also that it took at least 14 days for someone to report this. The neighbor and probably the landlord of his house knew that baby was in that cage abandoned. Also the owner needs to banned for life from owning animals.

Was the father still at the residence? If so why wasn’t he also arrested for cruelty?

His only regret was in getting caught. Lock this sorry POS in a small cage with no food or water and forget about him. He’ll have plenty of time to contemplate and get his s$#t together.
