Jitters Abound As Gunman Remains Free

Cops are looking for 38-year-old Steven James Mauldin, of Summerville, for murdering two people on Hwy. 100 near the Floyd-Chattooga County line.

Mauldin is accused of shooting two people and wounding another man.

“Arrest warrants have been obtained for Steven James Mauldin charging him with two counts of murder along with other related charges. We are still looking for the silver Honda Civic. We do believe now that he is not in the area of the incident,” Chattooga Sheriff Mark Schrader said.

A manhunt for Mauldin has spread into Floyd County and Cherokee County, Alabama, according to sources. Local and regional law enforcement officials are looking for a silver 2003 Honda Civic. It’s possibly missing from the residence where the shooting took place. The license plate number is RMR8244, according to the sheriff.

Dispatchers at E-911 received a call at 8:01 a.m. that a shooting had occurred at a residence on Hwy. 100 near the Chattooga and Floyd county line. After arriving, they found two people dead and another shot. The injured man was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Floyd County.

Since the manhunt started, Chattooga school officials put local campuses on heighten alert and increased security as a precaution. Around 3 p.m. deputies were called to the Pennville Walmart after an older customer thought the shooter might come to the store. Chief Deputy Kevin Woods said that information was not credible.
