Checks Stolen From A Local Auto Dealer
Someone stole a page of business checks from a Summerville used car lot and then tried cashing them Friday in Tennessee, according to police reports.
The checks were stolen from an office manager’s desk at Mark’s Auto Sales at 10423 Commerce Street. Owner Paul Marks did not discover the missing page until Regions Bank called.
A man tried cashing a $3,980 check at a Regions Bank in East Ridge, Tenn. The man told bank employees his name was William Hill of West Virginia and that Marks had made the check out to him, according to a police report.
“Mr. Marks advised the bank that he did not authorize that check and asked for a copy to be sent to him. The bank manager told Mr. Marks that they could not detain the subject but could refuse to cash the check and sent him away. Upon receiving the copy, Mr. Marks advised that the signature on the check was close to his but did not match,” Officer Jo Stricklin stated.
The information was turned over to investigators, according to a police report.
