Tax Commissioner Joins Others In Leaving Local Party

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton is stepping away from the Democratic Party. Here is her letter:

“Dear Friends:

I want to thank those of you who have supported me in my campaign and my role as Tax Commissioner.  As many of you know, I did not choose to run for this position because I am a politician; rather, I wanted to serve the great citizens of this county, advocate for them, and serve them to the best of my ability.  I am thankful those who helped to ensure my campaign did not use any negativity.  I hope that I have lived my life in such a way that there is no question about my moral compass, yet I find myself answering more and more questions in public that have no bearing on my ability to do my job.  Therefore, at this time, I wish to break away from affiliations with any political party, as my job duties are not swayed by either one.

I do not currently know which, if any, certain ticket that I will choose when I seek re-election.  When the time comes, I will choose the platform that most closely mirrors my own beliefs, while preserving my duty to treat all citizens fairly- regardless of social status, race, or political affiliations.

To those who have supported me as an elected official, I sincerely appreciate you and hope that you will continue to support me in the future.”
