Trion Superintendent Gives An Update On Earlier Gun Scare

From Trion Schools Superintendent Phil Williams:

“Trion City Schools initiated a lockdown of its campus today at approximately 12 noon when a sixth-grade student was found to have an unloaded pistol in a backpack. As soon as this situation was discovered, the Trion Police Department and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department were contacted. The Sheriff, Deputies, and the School System’s Resource Officer immediately responded on campus. Law enforcement officials searched lockers, interviewed students, and positioned deputies in multiple locations on campus to ensure the safety of everyone on campus at the time of this incident.

“The student with the unloaded weapon has been arrested. Throughout this incident, all school system safety protocols were followed. The school system was taken off of lockdown by 1:00 PM.

“We appreciate the quick response by the Trion Police Department and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department. The student is being turned over to juvenile justice and the investigation is continuing with both the Trion Police Department and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department.”

in 1990 i regularly parked my truck in front of the old high school with a 12 Gauge Riot gun and a old .303 Enfield Mk 3 in a rifle rack in my window. nothing was said, and it was never a issue. i was a senior and legally owned both firearms. it never once occurred to me to use them on anyone at school. times they sure have changed.
