The city has contracted with Atlanta artist John W. Christian to complete a mural on the Chattooga County Registrar’s Office next to the courthouse.
This mural will put the city on the Georgia Mural Trail created by John Christian and Go Georgia Arts in late 2014.
“The trail started as a five-year program to paint fifty murals in 50 cities in five years. Our goal is to get other artists, organizations, and sponsors on board to help with the painting, funding, and marketing of the trail. The trail focuses on smaller cities under 10,000 people and cities under 50,000 people,” according to Georgiamuraltrail.com website.
“He wants to do something that represents the county as a whole,” Better Hometown Director Susan Locklear said about the design.
The city consulted with the Chattooga Historical Society and asked what images represent this county. Christian looked at photographs and develop a design.
“He is supposed to be getting me a mock-up of what he wants to do,” Locklear said.
Summerville used to be known for its murals. They used to be on all sorts of buildings and schoolhouse walls. Over time, those buildings were demolished or paintings covered up.
