I want to begin my article with a quote from Mike Gifford: “If you walk toward the light the shadows will always be behind you.” As I read this quote, I thought how simple yet so profound. It certainly carries with it a spiritual truth and application. We read in 1 John 1:5 “God is light and in him is no darkness at all.” We all have that past, things behind us, that we just don’t like to think about much less discuss with someone. We, as humans, do our best to place the past in a sealed compartment of our memory bank and forget about it. Our past failures and mistakes can haunt us and if allowed to do so, will drag us back down making us feel as the most unworthy individual ever. Considering the text of 1 John 1:5 we need to understand we must continually walk toward the light. God is always before us and knows us Psalm 139. As we walk toward the light, there will always be our past but our past will always be behind us as we press forward. Philippians 3:13. For some, the most difficult part of the walk is getting started. Getting started on the walk is perhaps like getting started on a diet to lose weight. You may look for the best diet to use or the easiest path to walk but eventually you have to commit to it and do it. To walk towards the light there is really only one path to travel, and it is not easy. Matthew 7:14. Also the path which is towards the light requires you to change and become a new person by burying the old person of sin. Romans 6. Unless one is willing to commit to the walk, they will never reach the destination and will continue to walk in darkness. Jesus stated in Mark 16:16 that he who believes and is baptized shall be saved. If one believes they can do it, commits to doing it, they will do it and heaven will be reached. I encourage all to walk towards the light by becoming a New Testament Christian today and begin a new life free of sin and guilt. Are you ready to walk toward the light?
Until next week, this is the Scriptural Truth. Tommy O’Kelley, Minister, Subligna Rd. church of Christ, 706-638-1129 or 423-413-5319, email or Facebook.
