(Updated) James Alfred “Sarge” Gentry

Mr. James Alfred “Sarge” Gentry, age 86 of the Little Sand Mountain Community, passed away Monday, May 06, 2019 at his residence.

Mr. Gentry was born in Trion, Georgia on February 12, 1932, son of the late Thomas Jefferson Gentry and Winnie Lee Bohannon Gentry. He attended the Ebenezer Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Corporal during the Korean War. Prior to moving to Merced, California, Mr. Gentry was employed in the Spool Room at Riegel Textile Mills. He and his wife, Geneva, both worked for and retired from Tri Valley Growers in Los Banos, California. Following their retirement, they moved back to Chattooga County. He was a member of the Floyd Springs Masonic Lodge, the Tehran Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Fresno. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by the love of his life, Carolyn Geneva Cargle Gentry; and two sisters, Edith Garner and Evelyn Walker.

Mr. Gentry is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Gary Kee of Armuchee; son and daughter-in-law, James Edward and Kathy Gentry of Armuchee; Special Friend, Betty Stewart; 9 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Gentry will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. in the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Miles Phillips and Rev. Benny Price officiating, Interment will follow in the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Graveside Rites.

Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will behis great grandsons and include: Anthony Lingo, Jason McCarty, Shawn Blanton, Jade Young, Michael Sterling, Matthew Herring, Andrew Herring, Aaron Herring, Trey Greenhaw, Jaxson Gaddy, Braydon Gaddy, Tristan Pierce, Jordan Pierce, Jakob Monteon, Cameron Gentry and Sean Donaldson.

Mr. Gentry will be lie-in-state at the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church where the family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour.

The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
